Tonight on InterCHANGE

Here are the topics the panel discusses Friday night at 6:30 on InterCHANGE on Milwaukee Public Television with a repeat Sunday morning at 11:00:

1 – Carlos Santiago - UWM.

After six years at UWM, Chancellor Carlos Santiago is leaving to go raise money for an Hispanic organization (The Hispanic College Fund) in Washington, D.C.  He has pushed UWM into a phase of tremendous growth.  There is a new School of Freshwater Sciences, there will be a new School of Public Health (probably at the Pabst Complex), and a new Engineering campus (probably out in Wauwatosa on the County Grounds.)  There has been growing enrollment, and more new dorms.  UWM has outgrown its reputation of being a commuter school for those who simply couldn’t afford to go someplace else.  What’s next?  Has UWM grown too big?  Has it outgrown its eastside footprint?  How was Santiago able to accomplish so much?  What does it need in its next chancellor?  Should it continue to get as much money out of Madison as possible, or should state lawmakers be more focused on UW-Madison as the flagship campus of the system?  Is UWM becoming more appealing as a first choice university for graduating high school seniors?  Which gubernatorial candidate would be the best governor for UWM?

2 – Train Station.

IF the high speed Milwaukee to Madison train becomes a reality, where should the train stop enroute to Madison?  At first the train was going to go to the Madison airport, now it’s going to stop in downtown Madison near the capital building.  The train was also going to stop in Oconomowoc, now that appears to be out of the running?  There has also been talk of a stop in Wauwatosa, Brookfield, or Watertown.  Where should the train stop?  Some think it should stop near Highway 100, on the County Grounds in Wawatosa, where there are a variety of medical and engineering facilities.  That seems to make sense, but should a high speed train be stopping ten minutes after it leaves the downtown Milwaukee station?  Why have it stop in Brookfield or Watertown?  Would anybody get on there?  How much of an expense will it be for a municipality to build and maintain a train station?  Should all these question be answered before this project goes any further?

3 – State Prison Chief.

The state employee in charge of responding at a moment's notice to riots and other disturbances in Wisconsin prisons recently moved to Illinois, more than 90 miles away from his office in Madison.  Only in Wisconsin….

4 – Favre.

He’s not a Packer but it remains one of the most talked about sports stories in Wisconsin.  Brett Favre appears set to begin yet another season in Minnesota.  Will he take them to the Super Bowl this year?  Are most Wisconsin sports fans supporters or haters of Brett Favre?  Why do you think he acts the way he does at the beginning of every season?  If you were a team owner would you put up with it just to get him to play for you?
