This Just In ...

Kevin Fischer is a veteran broadcaster, the recipient of over 150 major journalism awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, the Wisconsin Associated Press, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and others. He has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for over three decades. A longtime aide to state Senate Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature, Kevin can be seen offering his views on the news on the public affairs program, "InterCHANGE," on Milwaukee Public Television Channel 10, and heard filling in on Newstalk 1130 WISN. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their lovely baby daughter, Kyla Audrey, in Franklin.

Congratulations Franklin on an outstanding season!

But it ended again with a playoff loss to Waunakee, 23-7. Franklin finishes 12-1.

My observations:

1) This game might have been lost at the coin toss. Franklin made, I believe, the foolish choice after winning the toss of deferring to the second half. You have arguably the most powerful offense in high school football in the state. TAKE THE FOOTBALL. Instead, Franklin kicked off, and though they held Waunakee on their first possession, a pattern of excellent field position for Waunakee began and held for the first half, allowing the Warriors some early scores that proved to be enough.

2) The trenches. For the second year in a row, Waunakee manhandled the Sabers.

3) Great defense by Waunakee. Lance Baretz had little time to throw, and how many of his passes were deflected at the line of scrimmage. Franklin was averaging 45 points per game. They scored 14 last year vs. Waunakee. This year?

4) If Franklin wants to advance in the playoffs in the future, they can’t be the kid on the beach getting sand kicked in their face by the bully.

Still, a great run, but after giving up 27 points vs.South Milwaukee last week, a victory against Waunakee seemed almost impossible this week.

Heads held high, Franklin. Even though they’re Division 2, Waunakee might be the best football team in the state.
