Brrr, it’s cold out there. And remember, it’s still fall. Winter isn’t officially that far away and Fido needs special treatment when the temps drop.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) has compiled a helpful list of winter care tips for dogs that include some you would expect like don’t leave your dog outside too long, dry off your dog if it gets wet from rain or snow, and don’t leave the dog alone in a car.
One of the AKC’s health tips reads, “Antifreeze, which often collects on driveways and roadways, is highly poisonous. Although it smells and tastes good to your dog, it can be lethal.”

Under Wisconsin’s new law, any engine coolant or antifreeze sold in the state that has more than 10% ethylene glycol must contain, as a bittering agent, denatonium benzoate in a concentration of not less than 30 parts per million nor more than 50 parts per million.
Manufacturers of engine coolant or antifreeze will be required to keep a record of the trade name, scientific name, and active ingredients of any bittering agent used in the product and make the record available to the public upon request. Manufacturers, processors, distributors, recyclers, or sellers of coolant or antifreeze covered under this law will not be liable to any person for any personal injury, death, property damage, environmental damage, including damage to natural resources, or economic loss that might be caused by the inclusion of denatonium benzoate.
Coolant or antifreeze containers with a capacity of 55 gallons or more are exempt.
Violators may be imprisoned in the county jail for not more than 90 days or fined not more than $1,500 or both.
The new law is expected to save many, many animal lives. It doesn’t go into effect, however, until January 1, 2012.
Here is more information on how you can detect antifreeze ingestion in your pet.
