Don't Forget to File Tax Returns by Midnight April 18, 2011
The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) expects approximately three million income tax returns this season, and about 75% of them will be filed electronically, ranking Wisconsin sixth in the nation. Filing electronically saves DOR more than $3 on processing costs per return, translating into a total savings of nearly $6.3 million! The current average refund for 2010 returns is $667.
If you will not meet the April 18 tax filing deadline, you may request an extension from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by April 18 to avoid penalties. That gives the you until October 15 to file your tax return without penalty; however, 1% interest will accrue each month on the amount due until the tax return is filed. People filing an extension with the IRS automatically receive a state extension. You must attach a copy of the IRS extension to your Wisconsin income tax return. Also, do not forget to keep a copy of IRS Federal Extension Form 4868 for your records.
Wondering where is your refund? You may check your state income tax refund status online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week regardless whether you filed a e-form or a paper form. Visit www.revenue.wi.gov and click on the words, Check Your Refund, or call toll-free 866-947-7363 (WIS-RFND) to check the status. DOR provides the same information online and by phone.
