Culinary no-no's

THERE ARE THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF

FOOD BLOGS, BUT ONLY ONE CULINARY NO-

NO!

This week, we're talkin’…

Romance and ...

Cash!

For the purposes of this week’s exercise, important elements include attractive women...

And not so attractive women...

Handsome men…

And, not so handsome men...

Maybe not the best of examples for this particular no-no because they're married. But from an attractiveness perspective, you get the point.

Here’s the central question of debate.

On a romantic dinner date, who pays?

This is serious stuff, so much so that the University of St. Andrews did a thorough study entitled, “The Effect of Attractiveness on Food Sharing Preferences in Human Mating Markets.”

Translation: Simple. As I said, on a romantic dinner date, who pays?

It started with an online experiment with 416 participants included who (a) completed all parts of the experiment and (b) reported that they had taken the time to answer questions honestly and .(c) reported they were heterosexual and (d) were clearly of reproductive age (i.e., 20 to 35 years old).

According to the study, “They were asked to rate how attractive they considered themselves on a scale of 1 = very unattractive to 7 = very attractive. Participants were then given the following instructions: You will now be shown a series of facial images in two blocks. You should imagine that you have been out for a meal with the individual in the photograph. There are then three options for paying the bill at the end of the meal. You have to decide what you would prefer: to pay for both of you, to split the bill in half or for the other person to pay for the meal.  We presented participants with 12 opposite sex facial images and asked who they would prefer to pay the bill.

What did researchers find?

“Most often participants preferred to split the bill (Male: 47%; Female: 50%)”

BUT…

“Both sexes more often reported a preference for their date to pay (Male: 30%; Female: 45%) than to pay for the meal themselves (Male: 23%; Female: 5%).”

The pattern was obvious. Cheapskates simply didn’t want to pay. If they had to pay, they wanted to go Dutch, 50-50. Even so, again from the study:

“Female participants preferred the opposite sex to pay for the meal more often than males, indicating a significant sex difference in choice. Our results showed that neither sex prefers to pay the bill, but that females have a higher tendency to prefer meals to be paid by their date.”

Let’s go over the data once more.

·       Women more than men would prefer to keep their purses closed. Women more often reported a preference for the opposite sex to pay than men did.

·       Willingness to pay on a date depended a great deal on how the sexes considered their self-attractiveness.

·       The level of attractiveness of the date influenced the willingness to pay for the meal. Male participants were more willing to pay for more attractive dates. By comparison, female participants preferred that more attractive dates pay for them. In other words, females were more full of themselves. If a date was less attractive, women were more apt to pay.

The study found, “In conclusion, we found that women preferred male dates to pay, especially when those dates were attractive men, and men showed a willingness to pay for female dates, especially when those dates were attractive women.”

To repeat, the majority (both sexes) supported splitting the tab, Dutch treat, 50-50.

Cool or not?

Etiquette experts say…no.

If you ask for a night out, you pay for the night out, period. One etiquette official says some women are offended if the guy pays all the time. I don’t know. I’ve never met that woman or know if she’s actually alive today.

Look, I’m not shocked by the study results. Female prima donnas expect to be given the royal treatment. Men sitting across the table from a knockout start thinking with that body part that got a NY Congressman in trouble last week..

Whatever happened to chivalry?

Call me old school.

Call me old fashioned.

Guys, I don’t care if she’s a stuck up, egotistical diva. You want to break bread with her in public, you pay for that pleasure.

In fact, Mr. and Mrs. Fischer taught me that the male always, always, always paid for the meal. The heck with Emily Post or Evolutionary Psychology.

I've dated a number of lovely ladies. Married two of them. I paid for all their meals.

The man pays.

Always.
