High Debt Leads to US Slip Among World Economies

Indicators that our country is headed the wrong direction are everywhere. Unemployment lingers at unacceptable levels and national debt continues to spiral out of control with no end in sight.  Recent polls reveal nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.  Now, the United States has slipped again in standing among most-competitive economies.  During 2008, the United States had the most-competitive economy.  By 2010, that ranking was fourth.  Now, we have slipped again.

The organization releasing the rankings, the World Economic Forum, pointed to huge deficits as a major reason for the continuing slide.  As we saw with the credit downgrade earlier this year, massive levels of debt have a discouraging impact on business.  In Wisconsin, Republicans have made great strides to make Wisconsin a great place to live and do business.  Republicans have balanced the state budget and repaid funds raided during past administrations.  The state's credit rating was also affirmed by all three bond rating agencies earlier this year.

Things look bleak on the national level, however here in Wisconsin, things are going in the right direction.  While national debt is sinking our country’s ranking, Wisconsin erased deficits and created a surplus.
