This Just In ...

Kevin Fischer is a veteran broadcaster, the recipient of over 150 major journalism awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, the Wisconsin Associated Press, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and others. He has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for over three decades. A longtime aide to state Senate Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature, Kevin can be seen offering his views on the news on the public affairs program, "InterCHANGE," on Milwaukee Public Television Channel 10, and heard filling in on Newstalk 1130 WISN. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their lovely young daughter, Kyla Audrey, in Franklin.

One of the biggest mistakes of my married life

I had been married only three or four days (the first time). A new day was dawning in the Aloha State.  Just outside our hotel room door, the free morning paper had been placed.

Tucked inside in a small box at the bottom of a page was a nondescript ad for season tickets to the NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu. That was almost 30 years ago when I glanced at the ad. The NFL’s post season all-star game had been played in Hawaii since 1980.

Hmmm, I thought as I began to take more than just a glance. If my recollection is correct, I could have secured annual season tickets near midfield at Aloha Stadium for a mere $15/ticket.

Think about it.

NFL football.

It’s biggest stars.

In paradise.

Beaches.

Palm trees.

Bikinis.

In late January/early February.

In some of the best seats in the house.

This would be great!

Then my stupid light went on.

The more I discussed it with my new bride, the more negatives we came up with.

This would mean an annual trip.

Could we afford it?

What if we couldn’t go?

What if we couldn’t sell the tickets?

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Friends of mine from Wisconsin who do have Pro Bowl season tickets and have enjoyed them for many years are, as I write this, somewhere in sunny, 77-degree Honolulu.

They always share fun stories and photos.

Envy sets in.

And it hearkens me back to my first honeymoon.

Damn.
