The Three-Year Embarrassment

TOMMY-SENATOR

A lot has happened during the last three years; my granddaughter was born; the iPad was released; the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl; and Governor Scott Walker brought fiscal sanity back to Madison after years of Democrat mismanagement.

However, one important event hasn't occurred: the United States Senate has not passed a budget.  Check out my budget reform proposal here.

Unbelievably, the last time the Senate passed a budget resolution was April 29, 2009.

Since that time, another $39,000 has been added to the average family's share of the national debt.

It is unfathomable that throughout nearly all of my granddaughter's life, the United States has been operating without a budget.  No business in America could survive by being this irresponsible.

But Democrat Majority Leader Harry Reid, in a transparent game of political theater, has refused to bring a budget resolution to the Senate floor, further imperiling our already weak economy and contributing to the reckless spending that's driven our nation's debt to record levels.  The irresponsibility and lack of leadership by Senate Democrats is appalling.

If Senators fail to do their job, in this case a legal obligation to produce a budget resolution, they shouldn't get paid.  Period.

Earlier this year, I introduced a proposal through my RESTORE America plan which would hold the Majority Leader, budget committee chairmen, and rank and file senators personally accountable for failing to pass a budget resolution in the senate.  Senators will simply not get a paycheck if they can't do their most fundamental duty of acting on a budget.

It's critical that we hold Harry Reid and Senate Democrats accountable for their irresponsible and reckless political gamesmanship.  And it starts with this campaign.

As a United States Senator, I will bring this commonsense budget reform proposal to the floor regardless of which political party holds the majority in the U.S. Senate.

Through responsible budgeting and fiscal discipline we will get American back on track...cut government spending, reduce our nation's debt, and avoid the looming fiscal crisis forced upon us by the reckless spending of Harry Reid, Tammy Baldwin and Barack Obama.

We have a moral obligation to my granddaughter and the next generation to address America's debt crisis.  And I refuse to let our children and grandchildren inherit a nation that is less prosperous, less competitive and less free.

Thank you for your continued support,

 Tommy Thompson
