This Just In ...

Kevin Fischer is a veteran broadcaster, the recipient of over 150 major journalism awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, the Wisconsin Associated Press, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and others. He has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for over three decades. A longtime aide to state Senate Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature, Kevin can be seen offering his views on the news on the public affairs program, "InterCHANGE," on Milwaukee Public Television Channel 10, and heard filling in on Newstalk 1130 WISN. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their lovely young daughter, Kyla Audrey, in Franklin.

Meijer debate brings out the worst

Tonight the Franklin Common Council meets to consider several resolutions that would allow for the construction of a new Meijer’s store at Highway 100 and Loomis Road. I wholeheartedly support this addition to Franklin, the new consumer option and all the jobs it would bring, and I would feel the same way if it were across the street from my house.

The Facebook page for Franklin Today has posted a flier left in Franklin mailboxes over the weekend near the proposed Meijer’s site.

Photo: Just got this flier on my mailbox today. I'm somewhat concerned about the assertions and assumptions being made about this project. Fun Fact: When Target was proposed back in 2008 (I believe), the wealthier residents living directly across from Target had similar concerns to those presented in this flier. Did those living near the proposed Meijer today really care about them back then? I wouldn't say so - people wanted to shop at Target closer to their homes. In addition to this, what we learned about Target, and what we should learn about Meijer if they get the opportunity to build in Franklin, is that a lot of the concerns simply never materialize.

As you can see, all the usual (phony) arguments are mentioned among the scare tactics in the flier, none of them substantiated or based in fact.

Whoever is responsible for this creation of fiction is petty, small-minded, not at all visionary, and quite ignorant. This kind of action and mentality is preventing Franklin from progressing as a community and is highly embarrassing to the entire city and all of its residents.
