The six-month-old boy is completely unaware of the horror unfolding around him as officers carry him away from a scene of violence that shocked even the police. The children's father sat dazed in front of the house near Sacramento, California, still reeling after making the gruesome discovery while the baby boy was cradled by police officers. 9) A person takes a photo of a monument to polar bear Knut after its unveiling at the Zoo in Berlin, Germany, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012. Knut, who was born in December 2006 at the zoo, quickly rose to celebrity status as an irresistibly cute, fluffy cub. Knut was rejected by his mother at birth — along with his twin brother, who only survived a couple of days. He attracted attention when his main caregiver, Thomas Doerflein, camped out at the zoo to give the button-eyed cub his bottle every two hours. Knut died March 19, 2011 in front of hundreds of visitors at Berlin zoo, turning around several times and then falling into the water in his enclosure. A necropsy of the four-year-old bear showed he was suffering from encephalitis. (AP Photo/Michael Sohn)

Theo, a Springer Spaniel, worked alongside Lance Cpl. Liam Tasker, searching out roadside bombs in the Taliban stronghold of Helmand Province. Tasker was killed in a firefight with insurgents in March 2011, and Theo suffered a fatal seizure hours later. It is the highest award any animal can receive while serving in military conflict.
