This Just In ...

Kevin Fischer is a veteran broadcaster, the recipient of over 150 major journalism awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, the Wisconsin Associated Press, the Northwest Broadcast News Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, and others. He has been seen and heard on Milwaukee TV and radio stations for over three decades. He lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their lovely baby daughter, Kyla Audrey, in Franklin.

It's time to play, what WI municipality am I thinking of?

I’m about to give you several clues about a municipality in Wisconsin.

WHOA!

WHOA!

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAA!

Yes, I know, loyal adoring fans of This Just In…

Realizing the sheer number of counties, cities, towns and villages in Wisconsin makes this rather difficult from the get-go, I will narrow it down and tell you that I’m referring to a municipality in the southeastern half of the Badger State.

You can hear the reaction from liberals and public school graduates:

“Duhhhhhh, gee, dat’s better!”

OK, let’s go.

CLUE #1:

This municipality is having serious budget troubles.

Hey, c’mon Fischer. That’s not fair! That could be anybody! What are you tryin’ to pull Fischer?!!

Hmmmm.

I guess another clue is in order.

CLUE #2:

This municipality is in deficit.

Dammit Fischer! Every doggone locale in Tax Hell, Wisconsin is in deep doo-doo. What kind of game are you playing here?

Hey, hey, hey! You want me to just give it away?

CLUE #3:

Because the municipality is in dire economic straits, its elected officials all believe no  further burden should be placed on local property taxpayers.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Now that’s good.

Are you sure, Fischer, in this state of ridiculous property taxes that there is such a municipality with local leaders that feel that way?

Ummm, yes. There is.

CLUE # 4:

This municipality’s mayor also agrees that when it comes to the local taxpayers, enough is enough.

Fischer, this is almost too good to be true. You mean the mayor and, I’m guessing it’s a city so that means the Common Council members are all simpatico and actually want to give the poor beleaguered taxpayers a break?

Brace yourself. That’s exactly what I mean.

But I’ve got one more for ya.

CLUE #5:

Words are cheap. This municipality’s Common Council and mayor are seriously talking about real honest to goodness action to provide real honest to goodness property tax relief.

Five clues.

What could they mean?

I know.

Fischer writes for FranklinNOW. IT’S GOTTA BE FRANKLIN.

Don’t be foolish. That would be too obvious. It must be anyplace but Franklin.

OK. Makes sense. Maybe it’s out in conservative Waukesha County.

Or Ozaukee County.

Possibly West Bend.

So whatd'ya say, Kev? Who is it?

First of all, about the suggestion it’s Franklin. I’m, how do they say it using Internet lingo…I’m…..LMAO.

Franklin help taxpayers? Franklin aldermen would buy toilet seats from the Pentagon at twice their price. The Franklin School Board hasn’t met a huge property tax increase hasn’t fallen in love with.

Franklin?

Please, turn off the laughing gas.

How about....

Greenfield?

Greendale?

Oak Creek?

Brown Deer?

Wauwatosa?

Racine?

Kenosha?

Milwaukee?

WHO, FISCHER, WHO???

Sheboygan.

The Sheboygan Press reports, “With a continued tough economy expected and an estimated city deficit of $1.5 million looming for next year, the Sheboygan Common Council's Finance Committee adopted guidelines Tuesday night calling for a 2011 municipal budget that includes no increase in the city's portion of the property tax levy. The city's property tax levy for the 2011 budget, if the Common Council approves the guidelines next Monday, would go no higher than this year's levy of $20.8 million.”

Now read that portion again and see if you can figure out the key, but missing word  the reporter somehow neglected to use:

“With a continued tough economy expected and an estimated city deficit of $1.5 million looming for next year, the Sheboygan Common Council's Finance Committee adopted guidelines Tuesday night calling for a 2011 municipal budget that includes no increase in the city's portion of the property tax levy. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

FREEZE

Sheboygan is poised to approve a PROPERTY TAX LEVY FREEZE.

Now, can you imagine if any municipality tried that around here?

Like Franklin?

Aldermen Steve Taylor and Kristen Wilhelm, and maybe others, would go into cardiac arrest. You know the script. We’re going to hell in a hand basket. The city will deteriorate. People will die.

In other words, taxpayers who pay the bills be damned. Who cares if there’s a recession. Just keep that money rolling in, suckers.

And it’s not just Franklin. It’s statewide. Except…..

God bless you, Sheboygan
