The latest from Franklin alderman Kristen Wilhelm

Dear Residents,

It has been very busy. Here are a few quick updates with easy to scan headlines. There are many more but time is limited as I head out for more meetings. There is still more work to be done in the 3rd District!

PUBLIC HEARINGS

Please watch the city’s website for the many upcoming public hearings. One in particular has the potential to eliminate or greatly change the current natural resource protection standards for all development in the city. Think “additional drainage problems” caused by the lack of setbacks from waterways. Without your voices, this could be a well-intended idea taking the wrong approach.

STORM UPDATES

The 3rd District received damage in several areas. I have been out taking inventory and making calls to city staff for clean up.  Please be patient, staff is very busy.  Here is what I was able to record but this does not included backyards or all damages.  The 3rd District had power outages in most areas.  There were lines down at 51st and Drexel, siding and shingles lost, a window damaged, fences and tree damage, with the majority of the tree damage running from 51st and Drexel, over to the of Evergreen Ct. to Hillendale near Pleasant View, then near Tifton, to 35th. The Tumblecreek area was hit by the early storm taking out several trees. Water issues continue to be a problem and the power outage didn’t help with sump pumps not running. Keep backup batteries on hand.

BRUSH PICKUP

Special Notice 6/23/2010 from Engineer Bennett Due to the Friday and Monday Storms, Mayor Tom Taylor, in accordance with a policy adopted by the Common Council, has authorized a special tree and brush collection by John’s Disposal starting July 1, 2010 at 7:00 am. The special tree and brush collection is limited to the normal pickup with the tree branches cut to five (5) foot lengths and limited to a pile four (4) feet long and four (4) feet high.

If residents have more than the amount described above, they may (1) haul the material to the Public Works Garage located at 7979 W. Ryan Road, Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm (closed July 5) or (2) make arrangements for a special collection with John’s Disposal (888-473-4701) or any other private hauler at an agreed upon cost which is the responsibility of the resident.

The contract with John’s Disposal only provides for one round of collection; therefore, it is important that the material be placed at road or curbside on or before 7:00 am on Thursday July 1.

Piles placed after 7:00 am July 1st or amounts exceeding the limit stated above will not be picked-up and will be the responsibility of the property owner. This message will be placed on the City’s web site (www.franklinwi.gov) and Time-Warner Cable Channel 25.

HOLIDAY TRASH & RECYCLING SCHEDULE - NO DELAYS!

PLEASE NOTE that trash and recycling will be picked up on your regularly scheduled day the week of July 4th. Johns Disposal Services will be working on Monday, July 5th.

WATER PROBLEMS -PLEASE HELP ME HELP YOU

It would be extremely helpful if neighbors would check and remove any grass, branches, soda bottles etc. from street storm drains and culverts near their homes BEFORE an expected rain event (and even during if it is not under dangerous conditions). By pitching in, you may just save your own home from water damage. On Monday night I was out clearing blocked drains in the dark. Plastic bags and small downed branches were a big issue.

CITY-WIDE PROPERTY REVALUATION

The City of Franklin is undergoing a full revaluation for 2010 with the goal to bring properties in line with current market conditions. Property owners will receive a Notice of Assessment the week of July 12, 2010.

VEHICLE REGISTRATION & NO WHEEL TAX IN FRANKLIN

I frequently get vehicle registration questions from those of you living in the 53221 zip code of Franklin, with MILWAUKEE mailing addresses that are getting charged the $20 City of Milwaukee wheel tax. The MKE County Bd recently removed this tax. However, if you are charged extra here are the steps to eliminate that extra cost:

When your registration card comes in the mail, write the words “CAR KEPT IN FRANKLIN” on the card before mailing it back and subtract the $20 wheel tax from your enclosed payment.

OR

Call 608-266-1466, select the English option for those speaking English, select 5, select 5, select 2, and provide them with your plate number and inform that you reside in Franklin.

OR

Go to www.vehiclequestion.dot.wi.gov, give your plate number and address and that you reside in Franklin.

Zip codes are handled through the US Postal Service, and requests of me to change the zip codes of Franklin addresses off of the 53221 zip code and into the 53132 “Franklin” zip code is an issue to take up with your State and Federal reps.

76TH STREET and PUETZ RD Improvements

The Council considered and voted on one of several options given by Milwaukee County for the county’s reconstruction of 76th Street from Terrace Drive to Margaret Lane (just south of Puetz). The Council also voted on reconstruction options for Puetz between 76th Street and St. Martins Road (Hwy 100). Minutes of the action taken will be posted at www.franklinwi.gov after the next Council meeting.
