Greendale planners OK senior housing near Southridge

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

March 11, 2010 5:46 p.m. | Greendale - A proposal to add 90 units of housing for senior citizens near Southridge Mall was approved Wednesday by the city Plan Commission.

The housing is part of a larger plan to develop a parking lot and the old blood center adjacent to the mall. It would involve up to $16 million in public and private money and create as many as 75 jobs, according to a plan presented to the village.

Retail and commercial development would be included.

The village, using a tax incremental finance district, would spend $4.1 million to $5.7 million through a 20-year loan.

An estimated $5 million to $10 million in private investment would be made.

Man remains hospitalized after Taser incident at mall

By Amy Rabideau Silvers of the Journal Sentinel

Feb. 07, 2010 11:54 a.m. | A 20-year-old man remained hospitalized Sunday after an incident at Southridge Mall, in which a Greendale police detective used a Taser.

The man was checked and found unresponsive. The officer called for help and the man was revived by rescue personnel.

"He's alive and stable," Greendale Police Chief Rob Dams said Sunday morning.

The incident began about 4:20 p.m. Saturday when the detective - on routine patrol at the mall - saw the man grab a woman's collar with both hands.

"(He) pushed the woman backward, yelling at her that she could not buy any (expletive) shoes," according to a police department release. "The detective approached the male subject in an attempt to de-escalate his behavior toward the woman."

Plan would develop parking lot near Southridge Mall

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

Feb. 02, 2010 12:24 p.m. | Greendale — A proposal to develop a parking lot and the old blood center next to Southridge Mall would involve up to $16 million in public and private money, create as many as 75 jobs and add up to 100 units of housing for senior citizens, according to a plan presented to the village.

The village, using a tax incremental finance district, would spend $4.1 million to $5.7 million through a 20-year loan.

An estimated $5 million to $10 million in private investment would be made.

The site is bounded by commercial buildings fronting S. 76th St. on the west, W. Grange Ave. on the south, the mall on the north and a village-owned woodland preservation parcel on the east.

Senior housing would occupy four of the roughly 24 acres available for development, Village Manager Todd Michaels said Tuesday. It is not known what else might fill the site, he said.

Village gets funds for drunken-driving patrols

By MARK SCHAAF

Jan. 20, 2010 4:54 p.m. | The Greendale Police Department has received $10,000 to participate in drunken-driving enforcement efforts throughout Milwaukee County.

The money will be used to pay for officers' overtime so more squads are on the road, Police Chief Rob Dams said.

Greendale and several neighboring communities are part of the county's High Visibility Task Force. The state Department of Transportation provides funding to the Sheriff's Department, which distributes the money to several jurisdictions for extra officers on the roads.

No new operation referendum for now, district says

By MARK SCHAAF

Jan. 19, 2010 2:22 p.m. | Greendale — It's highly unlikely the school district will ask voters a third time for extra money to fund operations.

Following Superintendent William Hughes recommendation, all five members of the School Board said Monday they do not support another operational referendum.

Greendale residents in 2000 and again in 2004 approved a $550,000 operational referendum. When approved, the referendums allow the district to exceed state-imposed revenue caps and gather a specific amount of additional taxes over a specific time period.

The Greendale operational referendum is set to expire June 30.

Hughes and board members said they talked with many in the community and, citing the bad economic climate and rising unemployment rate, the consensus was to not pursue another referendum, at least for now.

Municipal group endorses uniform trick-or-treating hours

By Tom Kertscher of the Journal Sentinel

Jan. 11, 2010 4:14 p.m. | Cudahy — A group representing the mayors and village presidents of Milwaukee County's 19 municipalities recommended Monday that each community hold trick-or-treat on the same day - usually a Sunday.

The resolution is aimed at keeping children safe and deterring groups of kids from collecting candy outside their own communities.

The recommendation is not binding on any city or village.

Under the resolution, trick-or-treat would be held from 1 to 4 p.m. the Sunday on or before Oct. 31. When Oct 31 falls on a Saturday, trick-or-treat would be held that day.

The resolution is for 10 years.

No major snow concerns in Greendale so far

By MARK SCHAAF

Jan. 07, 2010 4:04 p.m. | Two accidents were reported in Greendale today, but it has been a quiet day for the Police Department despite the snowfall.

Plows have been out in full force throughout the day. Police also say traffic has been light as many residents seem to have stayed home or least off the roads.

Village declares snow emergency

By MARK SCHAAF

Jan. 07, 2010 10:34 a.m. | A snow emergency will go into effect in Greendale at 3 p.m. Thursday and last until noon Friday.

That means no parking is allowed on any public street during that time. Police will begin ticketing illegally parked cars at 3 p.m. and having them towed, said Carl Tisonik, director of public works.

"We ask people to stay off the streets, keep their cars off the streets and do not blow snow back into the streets," Tisonik said.

The village has 14 plows now out on the roads. All streets will get plowed at least three times and some as many as four or five times, Tisonik said.

"Our intention is to plow out all the subdivisions several times during this event," he said.
