• Timothy and Brenda Gertz of Oak Creek are parents of a son, Nathan Shane, born Aug. 23, 2009. He weighed 5 pounds, 3 ounces and was 18 inches. He joins brother Brent Joseph, 2. Grandparents are Tom and Joanne Gertz of Cudahy and Le Roy and Susan Grunewalk of Livingston.

• Brian and Melissa Vanness of Franklin are parents of a son, Mather James, born Aug. 2, 2009. He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and was 21 inches. He joins siblings Riley, 3, and Josiah, 1. Grandparents are Dave and Donna Vanness of Muskego and John and Judy Boeldt of Kohler. Great-grandparents are Hans and Shirley Boeldt of Plymouth, Eleanor Rowell of Milwaukee, and Marie Wozniak of New Holstein.

SCHOOLSCENE

Greendale High School and All-Star team took first place in the Division 1A competition in the annual Wisconsin State Fair Pom Pon competition on Aug. 9.

• The Greendale Stars took third place in the Division II Junior High team in the annual Wisconsin State Fair Pom Pon competition on Aug. 9.

Oak Creek All-Star Seniors took first place in the Division 1B competition in the annual Wisconsin State Fair Pom Pon competition on Aug. 9.

Oak Creek High School took third place in the Division 1A competition in the annual Wisconsin State Fair Pom Pon competition on Aug. 9.

CAMPUSNEWS

Lindsey Swanson of Oak Creek graduated from Marquette University in May.

Erik Bengtson of Franklin graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, with a bachelor's degree on May 16. He was also named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester.

Alex Bialk, Joseph H. Jungbauer and Andrew Muhich, all of Franklin, Justin Marcelini of Hales Corners, and Justin D. Hinkley of Oak Creek are all participating in the Cooperative Education Program at the University of Wisconsin-Stout this year.

• The following students graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in spring 2009: Joshua Kenitzer, Joelle Podewils and Emily Weitkunat - Franklin; Ryan Perez - Greendale; LeahKlaybor - Hales Corners; Erica Lenz, Sara Mason, Jessica Pietrangelo and Brenton Thom - Oak Creek.

Jordan Napoli of Oak Creek graduated from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in spring 2009.

David M. Speer of Hales Corners graduated from Missouri State University on July 31.

Kristen Anhalt of Franklin was named to the dean's list at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, for the spring 2009 semester.

• The following students graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 16: Sarah Kerrigan, Andrew Lasecki, John Poulos, Stephanie Wisniewski and Cheryl Zakszewski - Franklin; Scott Acker, Steven Fischer and Katherine Slupski - Greendale; Elizabeth Johnson and Matthew Mueller - Oak Creek.

• The following students were named to the dean's list at Mount Mary College for the spring 2009 semester: Erin Hallo, Cynthia Plovich and Lynn Sprotte - Franklin; Brittany Tarera - Greendale; Christina Austin, Lea Mank, Melissa Patzer and Jennifer Raap - Oak Creek.

Kimberly Anderson of Franklin and Joshua Marks of Oak Creek graduated from St. Norbert College on May 17.

Rachel Curtis, a Franklin High School graduate, received an $8,000 scholarship from the Johnson Controls Foundation. She is applying it toward tuition at Vanderbilt University, where she plans to major in neuroscience.

Kathryn Staats of Greendale, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, is taking part in the National Student Exchange program, in which students spend part or all of the school year attending school in another state. She will attend Towson University.

Nicole Lien of Greendale and Casey Pederson of Oak Creek are 2009 graduates of Western Technical College.

Elizabeth Poppe of Greendale was named to the spring 2009 University of Minnesota-Twin Cities dean's list.

Lynann Brusewitz of Franklin received a $1,000 scholarship from the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation. Brusewitz is pursuing a degree in physical therapy at Carroll University.

YOURNEIGHBORS

Grant Bernard of Greendale graduated from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps Pacific Region after 10 months of community service nationwide. AmeriCorps 296 members worked in teams of 10 to 12 throughout the United States. The Pacific Region teams served in regions devastated by hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike.

John Munger of Greendale was honored with a community service award from the Greendale Lion's Club for his commitment and dedication to Greendale on Aug. 9. Munger started the Greendale Village Concert Band, the Village Swing Band, and the Village Ramblers, a seven-piece Dixieland Band.

August Beck of Franklin was recently awarded the 2009 Green Bay Packer Youth Football Camp Leadership Award at the camp held at the Milwaukee Sports Complex. The award is given to the camper who exemplifies team spirit, positive attitude and leadership qualities. He received three tickets to the Packers-Browns preseason game.

Erin Clark of Franklin has been named to the Institute of Management Accountants Greater Milwaukee Chapter 2009-10 Board. She is serving as vice president of membership.

Kelly Dalton of Franklin, a dancer with the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance, performed as the opening act for this year's Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon.

• Franklin resident Mary-Elizabeth Fenn is the only dancer featured on the new "Spinal Tap" DVD, released Sept. 1. She is a dance major at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

YOURNEIGHBORS

• The Leslynettes Baton Twirling and Flag Corps returned from the national championships at Notre Dame University with many group and solo performing competition awards; 14 members won individual awards, and the team members took home 101 medals, along with eight group awards and six titles. Members are from Cudahy, Oak Creek, South Milwaukee, St. Francis, Milwaukee, Muskego and Menomonee Falls. They include Debra Kopydlowski (seven awards), Samantha Treider (seven), Michelle Papala (nine), Dana Papala (10), Amanda Hansen (eight), Taylor Paine (three), Emily Rodriquez (eight), Brittany Komorowski (five), Lexi Vincent (11), Emily Paine (six), Robbin Scott (seven), A.J. Piekarski (eight), Andy Piekarski (seven) and Andrew Ledoux (five).

• U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Elisabeth J. Heyn graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. She is the daughter of Lawrence Heyn of Oak Creek and a 2008 graduate of Parkway Christian Academy.

• U.S. Air Force Airman Robert C. Dentici graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is the son of Angela Cleveland of Franklin and a 2006 graduate of Franklin High School.

• U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Julia E. Fischer graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. She is the daughter of Robert and Mary Fischer of Franklin and a 2006 graduate of Franklin High School.

Cheryl L. Gaa has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after successfully completing the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program and graduating with a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is the daughter of Jim Gaa of Greendale and Christine Piwinski of Franklin. Cheryl is a 2005 graduate of Whitnall High School.

• U.S. Air Force Airman Amy L. Ressel graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. She is the daughter of Randy and Janice Ressel of Oak Creek and a 2008 graduate of Oak Creek High School.
