Teen arrested for stealing GPS units from cars

A 17-year-old Franklin boy was arrested for allegedly stealing GPS units out of two unlocked vehicles, then trying to elude police the evening of Aug. 28.

According to the Franklin police report:

At 10:45 p.m. Aug. 28, a resident called police to report a suspicious vehicle with two occupants parked in the 8000 block of South Meadowcreek Court. Police stopped the vehicle on 83rd Street, and a male passenger got out and ran off. He was last seen running westbound between houses and carrying a backpack.

Police identified the fleeing teen as a 17-year-old Franklin boy after they found his driver's license at the scene. Officers went to the boy's home, and he turned himself in.

The backpack was found in the 8400 block of West Forest Hill Avenue. In the backpack was a Garmin Nuvi GPS unit with an address written on it. When police went to the address in the 8200 block of South Four Oaks Drive, the homeowners confirmed it was their GPS unit that had been stolen out of their car.

Also found in the backpack was an Insignia brand GPS unit, which was placed into property inventory.

The boy was arrested for theft from a vehicle, obstructing an officer, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers also arrested the driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old Franklin man, for possession of drug paraphernalia.
