Franklin sets dates for summer concert series
Franklin - Franklin Park Concerts has set the dates for its 2012 five-concert summer series, held at 1:30 p.m. Sundays at Lions Legend Park.
The dates are June 24, July 8 and 22 and Aug. 5 and 19, said Dale Pforr, one of the series founders.
In its fifth year, Pforr said the concerts, which have featured such bands as Milwaukee's Swing Nouveau and Blarney, have been well-received.
"We average, depending on which group is playing, about 200 people a concert," he said. "We started with four concerts. Last year, we went to five. That has worked very well."
The lineup for this year has not yet been determined.
Greendale Woman's Club accepting grant applications
Greendale - The Greendale Woman's Club is accepting grant applications for 2012.
Applications should include a project's cost, description and objectives, said Jan Meyers, club spokeswoman.
"Our first priority is looking at what benefits the community at large," she said.
Past recipients included the village's Park and Recreation Department, the food pantry at St. Alphonsus Parish and the Greendale Public Library.
Applications should be submitted no later than March 15 to the Greendale Woman's Club, P.O. Box 273, Greendale, WI 53129.
Applications sought for two $1,500 scholarships
Greendale - Greendale public and private school students are invited to apply for one of two $1,500 scholarships offered this year by the Greendale Woman's Club.
To qualify, applicants must be a village resident or the child or grandchild of a club member. They also must be a graduating senior attending a post-high school course of study full-time.
Scholarships are awarded based on the student's academic standing, written goals and financial need, said Spokeswoman Jan Meyers. Two references - one from the community and one from school - are also needed.
Applications, due April 18, are available on the Greendale High School website, www.greendale.k12.wi.us, or by contacting the club's scholarship chairwoman, Judy Fons, (414) 421-3519.

Digital offerings increase at Hales Corners Library
Hales Corners - The Hales Corners Library, as part of the Milwaukee County Federated Library System, is participating in a statewide program that is purchasing $1 million in digital offerings.
The Hales Corners Library contributed $1,095 to the purchase, said Patricia Laughlin, library director.
Right now, the Digital Download Center has 5,000 digital titles - e-books, audio books, video and music. But through this program, a much larger pool of downloadable material will be offered through the center, sponsored by the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium and available to all Wisconsin residents.
"The $1 million infusion will make this a very robust online library of downloadable material," said Laughlin, who noted that the digital material is licensed for a specific number of uses. Many of the new titles were available in December.
The bulk of the purchase, $700,000, is being funded by the state's 17 library systems, including Milwaukee County's, and their 385 member libraries. The Department of Public Instruction is contributing $300,000 for the purchasing pool.
