Greendale drubs Pius in football playoff opener
Panthers face Brown Deer next on Friday
A 44-point first-half outburst allowed the Greendale football team to quickly put away Pius XI in a WIAA Division 3 playoff contest on Friday night.
The Panthers went on to win 44-7 and can now focus on their second-round game, which will be against a familiar foe.
Greendale (10-0 overall) will visit Brown Deer at 7 p.m. Friday, just three weeks after pasting the Falcons 47-14 in a Woodland Conference crossover game.
In that contest, the Panthers racked up all 47 of their points in the first half, then coasted.
Brown Deer (7-3) is certainly capable of putting up points as well, having outslugged Two Rivers 61-42 last week behind an incredible all-around performance by quarterback Zack Baun.
The junior accounted for 601 total yards against Two Rivers, rushing for 354 yards and six touchdowns and passing for 247 more, with three scores.
Brown Deer coach Rob Green has vowed that his team will play much better than it did in the conference game against the Panthers, so Greendale must be ready.
The Panthers certainly looked ready against Pius XI as they struck for four first-quarter touchdowns.
Jake Zywicki got things started with a 16-yard scoring run, then Ty Ramirez returned a blocked punt 6 yards for another touchdown.
Quarterback Josh Ringelberg found Doug St. Onge for a 21-yard touchdown and Mitchell Brees for a 61-yard score as Greendale went up 27-0 after one quarter.
In the second period, Frankie Rutkowski returned an interception 36 yards for a score, Ringelberg connected with Nate Miller for a 61-yard touchdown and Rutkowski nailed a 46-yard field goal.
Ringelberg hit 6 of 10 passes for 205 yards and the three scores, with Brees catching two for 104 yards, Miller two for 75 yards and Brad Lachman two for 59 yards.
Zywicki led the rushing attack with 86 yards on 15 carries, an average of 5.7 per carry.
