Greendale baseball team wins four straight, stays on early-season roll
Panthers improve to 10-1 in baseball
After being handed its lone loss of the 2014 season, the Greendale baseball team just kept on winning last week.
The Panthers dropped a 6-4 decision to Pius XI on June 3, but rebounded with a 9-5 triumph over South Milwaukee on June 5, a 12-2 romp over Menomonee Falls on June 6 and a doubleheader sweep over neighboring Franklin 4-1 and 5-0 on June 7.
Greendale thus came into this week at 10-1 overall and 2-1 in the Woodland Conference.
The Panthers have put everything together this season, as their offense has hit double digits four times, the defense has been solid and the pitching stout.
"They really have good pitching," said Franklin head coach Jim Hughes after the sweep June 7. "They have three top guys, (senior) Zack Henderson, (junior) Zach Miller and (junior) Ty Ramirez. They pitched Miller and Ramirez against us, and we scored one run in two games."
In the first game of that doubleheader, Ramirez struck out 12 in just five innings to get the victory and senior Tyler Peterson finished up to post a save.
In the second contest, Miller hurled a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and fanning eight.
Greendale 12, Falls 2: Senior Ben Moore, junior Angel Ramirez, junior Sam Sabinash and Ty Ramirez each collected two hits in the victory, while junior Chris Carloni worked five innings, striking out seven.
Greendale 9, South Milwaukee 5: The Panthers led 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning but saw the Rockets tally four times to tie the game.
Greendale quickly responded as sophomore Tristian Pipp led off the seventh inning with a home run to left field to put his team ahead for good. The Panthers went on to score three more runs.
Henderson worked 51/3 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 10. Carloni recorded the victory in relief.
Pipp went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in, while Angel Ramirez was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Pius XI 6, Greendale 4: The Popes jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Greendale tallied three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Angel Ramirez. Ty Ramirez doubled to tie the game in the sixth, but Pius scored twice in the sixth to take the lead and then held on to win.
Miller took the loss on the mound.
Up next: The Panthers welcome Greenfield, which came into this week with a five-game winning streak, at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12.
They then meet New Berlin Eisenhower in a two-game set, playing at New Berlin at 5 p.m. Monday, June 16, and taking on the Lions at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17.
