Ray Hernandez and Matt Morales won sectional titles at Racine Horlick on Feb. 21 to advance to the WIAA Division 1 State Individual Tournament, which will begin at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 26, at the Kohl Center in Madison. They will be joined by Jeremiah Butler and Kyle Wey, who earned berths with second-place finishes.
Hernandez (33-6), a junior, stormed through his three matches at 140 pounds, winning twice on technical falls and won the title with a 12-5 decision over Josh Farnsworth of Racine Park. He faces senior Shaun O'Neill of Milton (26-4) in his first match.
Morales (32-5), a senior, won by pin and decision, and won the title with an 8-7 victory over Joe Hordyk of Bradley Tech. He meets senior Cody Stichman (33-3) of Waupaca.
Butler (32-7), a junior at 130, won by pin and decision, lost by major decision and was awarded second by virtue of his second-round victory over Jordan Wulz. He faces senior Sam Umlauf (40-4) of Wausau West.
Wey (33-7), a junior at 189, won by pin and decision, lost by a decision and was awarded second because he beat Alex Worzella of Franklin in his second match. Wey meets senior Jackson Hein (47-3) of Wausau West.
Hernandez lost his opening state match last year at 135. Wey lost his first match in 2007 at 160 and his first two in 2008 at 171.
Jake Hice (112) lost by rule for second place. Oak Creek placed third in the 16-school field with 78 points. Franklin won with 132.
Oak Creek could not get all the way out of a deep hole and lost to Franklin, 35-23, in a WIAA Division 1 State Team Wrestling Tournament Sectional final at Racine Case on Feb. 17.
The Falcons are sending three competitors to the WIAA Division 1 state individual tournament, which will begin at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 26, at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Elroy Perkin (119 pounds), Zach Noel (125) and Matt Schenke (171) each finished second at the WIAA Division 1 Racine Horlick Sectional on Feb. 21. Perkin and Schenke are seniors, Noel a junior.
Perkin won by pin, lost by decision and won by decision before defeating Steve Fisher of Greenfield, 2-1. Noel won by technical fall, lost on a decision and won on a pin before beating Peter Buchholz of Racine Horlick, 11-6. Schenke won by decision and pin, lost a decision, then beat Brett Hochstaetter of South Milwaukee, 5-2.
Perkin (42-7) will meet senior Thomas Campbell (39-6) of Fond du Lac. Noel (15-5), who lost his first match at state last year at 119 pounds, will face sophomore Zach Brucker of New Berlin Eisenhower (39-5). Schenke (37-9) draws freshman Roland Dunlap (41-1) of Muskego
Whitnall placed seventh in the 16-team sectional with 48.5 points. Franklin won with 132.
