Dukes tame Panthers in soccer sectional
The Whitefish Bay girls soccer team will have to beat the best to advance to the state tournament.
The Blue Dukes (16-5-3) advanced to the sectional final with a 2-0 semifinal victory over Greendale at Bay on Thursday.
Next up for Bay, the 10th-ranked team in the final Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll, is top-ranked Divine Savior Holy Angels. The sectional's top seeded teams will square off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Bay. They tied earlier this season.
"When we got together March 10 (start of practice) we really set our goals to get to this point," Bay coach Robert Williams said. "The girls have done every thing we've asked for. It should be fun."
Bay freshman Abby Starker scored both of her team's goals in the semifinal. She put the Blue Dukes on the board in the 50th minute with an assist from Kaitlin Theder and scored again in the 62nd minute on an assist by Kayla Jenkins.
Greendale (11-12-1), the lone team in the NOW coverage area south of Interstate 94 to make it to the sectional (13 teams total), finished 11-12-1.
"The first half was respectable," Greendale coach George Knezic said. "We played against a great team that eventually got an opportunity. Both goals were very nice."
