Sports Wrapups: Dec. 29

Greendale girls basketball

Only four Panthers scored, but Kelsey Pohlmann's effort was all Greendale needed in a 40-23 win over visiting St. Thomas More on Dec. 22.

Pohlmann scored a season-high 26 points, three better than the Cavaliers. She made nine shots from the floor and eight free throws while dominating the paint against undersized St. Thomas More.

Mary Merg scored eight points for the Panthers, who snapped a modest two-game losing streak and improved to 3-3 both overall and in the conference.

The defensive effort was a season best for the Panthers, who played in the Niki Doedens Holiday Basketball Classic in Cedarburg on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Greendale boys basketball

The Panthers did not score a lot of points Dec. 22, but the final ones made all the difference.

Greendale picked up a 39-38 win at St. Thomas More, the Panthers' fourth road win in five tries, behind Cordney Wren's game-high 13 points.

After jumping out to a 23-16 first-half lead fueled by four 3-pointers the Panthers did not score for eight minutes in the second half and found themselves trailing, 38-33, with less than two minutes left.

But Mitchell Placed grabbed an airball and made a lay-up with 10 seconds left to put Greendale up for good.

The Panthers played nonconference games with Milwaukee Riverside on Tuesday and Delavan-Darien on Wednesday and began the week 4-4 overall, 2-4 conference.

Greendale co-op hockey

Cory Chapp had three goals and three assists and Marques Surita had four goals as the Greendale co-op defeated the Wild United, which includes players from Whitnall, 11-2, at The Ponds in Brookfield on Dec. 22.

Jake Hardin and Mike Yablong had one goal and three assists each, and Brett Pokrzewinski had four assists for Greendale (4-5).

Clayton Anderson and Alex Sommerfeld scored goals for the Wild (0-8).

Oak Creek boys basketball

The Knights lost their third straight game by getting outscored by 10 points in the third quarter of a 60-53 loss at Hamilton in Sussex on Dec. 22.

Oak Creek got off to a rough start and faced an 18-8 deficit after one quarter, but bounced back with an 18-9 advantage in the second. Hamilton, however, outscored Oak Creek, 25-15, in the third to take control.

Hamilton's Brett Meinecke scored a game-high 20 points. Nick Stout had 12 points to lead 10 Knights who scored.

Oak Creek began the week 2-4 overall before playing in the Kettle Moraine Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday.
