Greenfield, Greendale swimming team takes second at Woodland Conference Relays
Panther-Hawks trailed Shorewood by 26 points
Greendale - A cursory glance at the results of the Dec. 5 Woodland Conference Relays swimming meet would seem to indicate that Shorewood might finally be pulling away from Greenfield/Greendale.
The Greyhounds won the meet with 286 points, while the Panther-Hawks claimed second at 260. That 26-point gap seems like a runaway compared to the teams' previous meetings, in which they tied twice and finished within one-half point of each other at the 2012 conference meet.
That margin is somewhat misleading, however, as Greenfield/Greendale head coach Dale Schrank explained.
"The (teams) ended up only about a couple of seconds apart," Schrank said. "There were two relays where Greenfield/Greendale and Shorewood were one and two and separated by approximately one second.
"Each relay resulted in a 12-point swing.
"Had those two relays gone the other way, we would have won. Even though the point totals were 26 apart, the meet was much closer than it looks."
Praising the champs
Schrank went on to praise the Greyhounds, adding, "They did to us what we did in the conference meet last year. They swam incredibly well at every opportunity and set their lineup strategically to give them their best shot.
"Hats off to both the swimmers and the coaching staff at Shorewood. It is always enjoyable to compete against that team."
Schrank has a running rivalry going with Shorewood in both the girls and boys seasons.
"In 2010, my other team (the Wauwatosa West girls) had a similar situation, when West won the relay meet and Shorewood captured top honors in the conference meet," he said.
Coach pleased with effort
Winners for Greenfield/Greendale were the 800 freestyle relay unit of Shawn Lucchesi, Adam Fleischhacker, Jeff Jacobs and Rick Perez with 7 minutes, 55.97 seconds; the 400 medley group of Perez, Ross Rybakowicz, Andrew Staszak and Dimitric Lazic at 3:58.31 and the diving team with 282.2 points.
Taking second were Niko Mendelin, Nathan Matecki, Lucchesi and Fleischhacker in the 200 freestyle (1:39.06); Andrew Semancek, Rybakowicz, Jacobs and Staszak in the 300 butterfly (2:52.01); Matecki, Jacobs, Fleischhacker and Lucchesi in the 400 freestyle (3:42.33) and Matecki, Jacobs, Ricky Davis and Rybakowicz in the 300 breaststroke (3:31.89).
Capturing third were the 200 medley group of Perez, Rybakowicz, Lucchesi and Lazic (1:48.87); the 100 medley group of Davis, Matecki, Semancek and Mendelin (56.45 seconds); the 500 freestyle unit of Austin Lasch, Lazic, Fleischhacker and Staszak (4:46.72) and the 300 backstroke group of Davis, Staszak, Lasch and Perez (2:59.29).
"We had great efforts across the board," Schrank said. "We had five swimmers brand new to certain events and to their credit, no disqualifications and no lapses in over 21 swims.
"Swimming above and beyond for us were Fleischhacker, Rybakowicz and Jacobs, all hitting their best times of the year."
Duffy captures first
Greenfield/Greendale claimed fifth in the Barracuda Invitational on Dec. 4 in Brookfield with 213 points.
Liam Duffy won the diving with 321.75 points for the only championship.
Perez took second in the 200 individual medley (1:58.75) and thirds were taken by Rybakowicz in the 200 IM (1:59.75), Perez in the 100 backstroke (54.36), the 200 medley team of Perez, Rybakowicz, Staszak and Fleischhacker (1:43.18) and the 400 freestyle group of Fleischhacker, Lucchesi, Rybakowicz and Perez (3:23.58).
In addition, Duffy finished third in diving with 305.7 points in Saturday's Franklin Invitational.
