Taste of Home gives back to the Milwaukee community during National Cooks Who Care Week, November 9-15

At Taste of Home magazine, getting into the holiday spirit begins in the kitchen and continues in the community with acts of kindness. Last year, Taste of Home declared the second week in November National Cooks Who Care Week — to celebrate the generosity of those who are giving back through food-related efforts. The purpose of Cooks Who Care is to use one's passion for food and cooking to benefit those in need. There's no limit to the possibilities!

How Taste of Home is Participating (And You Can, Too!)

Community-Wide Kitchen Drive: Taste of Home employees will host a kitchen drive to completely outfit 24 apartment kitchens for United Methodist Children's Services’ Washington Park Apartments in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — with everything from pans and utensils to food and appliances. The new apartments will provide housing to families that are trying to get back on their feet.

Before the apartments open in January, Taste of Home employees will set up the kitchens for the new apartments with all of the kitchen gear collected during the drive. The public will have the opportunity to donate their new or "like new" kitchen items at the Taste of Home Outlet Store in downtown Greendale from November 10-13, 2009.

Items that are still needed include: • Towels • Dish Towels • Sponges • Hot Pads • Oven Mitts • Juice Pitchers • Mixing Bowls • Measuring Cups/Spoons • Placemats • Toasters • Cutlery - Bread Knife, Chef Knife, Utility Knife, Paring Knife • Mugs • Glasses/Cups • Bowls • Spatulas • Hand Mixers • Coffee Maker • Thermometers • Cutting Boards • Strainers • Rolling Pin • Cookie Cutters • 5 qt Dutch Oven • Dish Soap • Trash Cans • Garbage Bags

Our generous corporate partners have already donated more than $28,000 worth of kitchen items for these apartments including the following: • 24 Circulon Contempo collection 10-piece cookware sets • 24 Hamilton Beach slow cookers • 24 8-piece dinnerware sets of Corelle dinnerware • 24 sets of Pyrex glass and metal bake ware, new tools and gadgets and glass prep ware • 50 Chicago Cutlery knives • 24 Corning baking dishes • 24 Taste of Home Cooks Who Care Cookbooks plus additional cookbooks • Wilton • King Arthur Flour • Rishi Tea • Stone Creek Coffee Roasters

Food Drive: All month long, RDA Milwaukee along with Greendale businesses will be collecting items for Milwaukee’s Hunger Task Force.

Thanksgiving Dessert Raffle: On Wednesday (Nov. 11), bring a non-perishable item to the Taste of Home Outlet Store (5602 Broad St.) in downtown Greendale. For each item of food donated, customers will receive an entry into our Thanksgiving Dessert Raffle. Two winners will be able to choose one of six holiday desserts made by the Taste of Home Test Kitchen. For donations of three or more items, customers will receive a free cookbook. Limit one per day.

Meal Programs: Employees from RDA Milwaukee are serving breakfast and dinner at a variety of local meal programs including St. James Episcopal Church (The Gathering), The Cathedral Center and the Salvation Army Waukesha.

Kathy’s House: Healthy Cooking Food Editor Peggy Woodward and Food Director Diane Werner will be delivering homemade cookies to Kathy’s House of Milwaukee.

Boys & Girls Club Cooking Class: As part of the Eat Smart program, Healthy Cooking Food Editor Peggy Woodward and Food Director Diane Werner will teach a cooking class at the Mary Ryan Center for 150 members of the Boys & Girls Club. The class will concentrate on cooking with fresh veggies & meat.

Bake Sale: RDA Milwaukee employees will host an internal company bake sale with the profits going to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
